HAZe: The Perils of College Drinking Culture in America

On September 16, 2004, Gordie, an 18-year-old freshman at the University of Colorado, pledged a fraternity.  The next morning, he was found dead – a victim of an irresponsible hazing ritual involving alcohol.  HAZE will shed light on the severity of college binge drinking, destructive drinking games and hazing.  This is a MUST SEE presentation for teens and parents.

When is graduation?

The graduation date is determined by the Merriweather Post Pavilion concert schedule.  The school system is assigned designated days and times by April 15 each year.  As soon as we are notified of the date, AHS will pass along the information in the form of a PA announcement, online alerts, AHS website and the PTSA newsletter.

How does my senior order graduation attire and accessories?

During homeroom (Jan 5) the Balfour representative distributed order forms for a cap & gown, announcements and other graduation accessories.

What if my senior was absent on January 5 when orders forms were distributed?

Your senior can get an order form from the front office.

When will the orders for graduation items be collected?

The Balfour representative will collect completed forms and checks on Thursday, January 13 through Friday, January 14, 2011 during all lunch shifts.

What if my senior does not turn in his/her form/money on the designated days?

Orders can be mailed directly to Balfour to the address located at the bottom center of the order form.  There is an additional $10 fee for orders that are mailed.

Can my senior order a cap/gown and other graduation accessories online?

Announcements/Caps/Gowns and accessories can be ordered at www.balfour.com

What if my family cannot afford a cap/gown for my senior?

Please call or email Ms. Clements at jennifer_clements@hcpss.org to discuss financial assistance.

How can my senior be sure his/her name is spelled correctly on the diploma/graduation program?

Did you sign a “Diploma Signature Form”?  To ensure that your senior’s name is spelled correctly on the diploma and graduation program ALL seniors must submit a Diploma Signature Form signed by a parent/guardian.  If your senior has returned the form…thank you.  If you have not signed the form please CLICK HERE or have your senior pick one up from Mrs. Beneski in the guidance office.  This form is due no later than January 26, 2011.

How can my senior be involved in the graduation ceremony?

All seniors are invited to audition to give a speech, dance, sing, or perform during the commencement ceremony.  Auditions are Thursday, February 3, 2011 in the choir room.  A sign up for auditions is located in the media center.  An extra copy of the speech/song is due to Ms. Kelly the day of the audition.  Snow Date:  Friday, February 4, 2011

Finally, THIS FORM is for parents who are permanent, Howard County Public School System employees. Employees are offered the opportunity to present the diploma to his/her child on stage at Graduation (if both the parent and student agree to this). If you are an HCPSS employee and are interested in this opportunity, please complete and submit it to Ms. Kelly. Due to the preparation involved in the commencement ceremony, Ms. Kelly, the graduation coordinator must receive your request ASAP or no later than Friday, May 4, 2012.

The final two questions above will hopefully generate some conversation about the upcoming course selection process (for current 9th – 11th graders); yes, it is that time already! The students will receive their course selection materials on Wednesday, January 4 (and they will be due back to their 6th period teachers by January 13). We encourage our students to talk with their teachers and families about their course selections for next year, and to make informed and purposeful decisions. These important decisions should be based upon future goals and interests while also making the most of the opportunities available here. To support all students in maximizing their potential in high school and thus graduating college and career ready, we encourage students to challenge themselves in their courses; we want all students to be challenged and to be successful. Please confer with your child about their selections and don’t hesitate to seek input from your child’s teachers and guidance counselor. While you know your child the best, the teachers and counselors are educational professionals; their recommendations and input are invaluable. It is important that the choices students make at this point in the process are firm decisions, as the master schedule for next year is built upon these course selections.

Please take note of the important dates and events related to course selection:

• January 4 – students receive course selection materials
• January 10 – Scheduling Orientation for parents of incoming 9th graders
• January 13– course registration forms are due back
• January 22-February 29 – guidance counselors will be meeting with all students to review their course selections; Graduation Requirement Checklists will be referenced during these conferences and given to each student.

Also coming up this month are mid-term exams; they begin on January 17. It is important for students to remember that mid-term exams do impact their final course grades – the exams are worth 1/10 of the final grade for a year-long course and 1/5 of the grade for a semester course. In addition to being a component of the course grade, the exams are also a great opportunity for the teachers to assess the students’ learning thus far; it is important, therefore, that the students take these exams seriously and do their best. The half days during exam week are scheduled to provide students with additional time to prepare for their upcoming exams while also getting adequate rest. Please encourage your children to use this time wisely. In addition to the time afforded during exam week, we encourage students to begin their preparation NOW for the upcoming exams. A great beginning to their exam preparation is for students to get their notebooks organized and class materials assembled; teachers will also be providing study guides and/or study guidance in the near future that will help students prepare for these inclusive exams (the midterms cover all of the material learned so far this year).

Mid-term Exam Schedule:

• Monday, January 16 – No School (Martin Luther King Jr. Day)
• Tuesday, January 17 – students take their 4A exam (is a full school day and exam is taken during their scheduled class time)
• Wednesday, January 18 – students take their Period 1 and 2 Exams (students dismissed 11:10 AM)
• Thursday, January 19 – students take their Period 3 and 4B Exams (students dismissed at 11:10 AM)
• Friday, January 20 – students take their Period 5 and 6 Exams (students dismissed at 11:10 AM)
• Monday, January 23 – No School for Students (Professional Work Day)

In addition to the PTSA, AHS is fortunate to be supported by our Booster Organizations (Athletics, Music, Drama Technology, and JROTC Booster Clubs); please heed the requests for help and support from these organizations – it is a great way to stay involved in our school community!

As we move through December, I know that once again time will go quickly.  We have many activities in this short month – fine arts’ performances, winter sports events, and community service opportunities.  Winter Break begins on December 24 (we are in school through December 23) and we reconvene on January 2.  Upon our return from Winter Break, the students will be selecting their courses for next school year (more to come on this in early January) and preparing for midterm exams (administered during the week of January 16).
